Prevalence of fatty liver among people with different occupation in Shenyang

Abstract

Abstract

Objective To determine the prevalence of fatty liver and its distribution among people with different occupation.Methods A total of 6992 subjects, including staffs of two hospitals, bank employees, factory workers and civil servants, were included in the study. Data were collected by Color Doppler ultrasound examination. Results From the total of 6992 subjects, 3662 were male and 3330 were female. The male to female ratio was 1.1∶1 and the age range was 18 to 92 years (average 40±11.34 years) . There was no significant age difference between men and women. Fatty liver was detected by ultrasound examination in 1593 participants (22.8%) . The prevalence of fatty liver in Shenyang was 21.2% (18.6% in men and 4.4% in women) after adjusting for age and sex. There was a significant difference between male and female sex (χ2=667.88, P<0.001) . After adjusting for sex and age, the incidence of fatty liver among hospital staffs, bank employees, civil servants and factory workers were 18.6%, 20.3%, 17.6% and 28.7%, respectively. The prevalence was higher in Factory workers than the other 3 groups but the difference was not statistically significant. Peak incidence age was 30-49 years (41.4%) in males; however the incidence increased with age in females. Multiple regression analysis showed that fatty liver was correlated with gender, age, BMI, waist circumference, systolic blood pressure, dyslipidemia, blood uric acid, fasting blood glucose and occupation. Conclusion The prevalence of fatty liver in Shenyang city is higher than southern part of China. The prevalence of fatty liver in factory workers is significantly higher than bank employees, civil servants and hospital staffs.
