The relation between peripheral blood cell count and liver histology in patients with chronic hepatitis B

Objective To study the relation between peripheral blood cell count, and inflammation grade (G) and fibrosis stage (S) in patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) .Methods 398 CHB patients were divided into 5 groups (S0～S4) according to liver fibrosis stages, and 4 groups (G1～G4) according to liver inflammation grades.The levels of RBC, WBC and PLT were analysed.Results The liver fibrosis stages and the degree of inflammation were negatively correlated with RBC, WBC and PLT counts.The spearman correlation coefficients of PLT with the liver fibrosis stages and liver inflammation grades were 0.743 (P<0.05) and 0.688 (P<0.05) , respectively.The amount of PLT was significantly different between S0～S4 and G1～G4, and the PLT count was less than normal (95.08±20.57) in S4.There was a statistically significant differences in the levels of RBC and WBC between S3 and S4, and S0, S1 and S2 (P<0.05) , furthermore a significant difference also observed between G4, and G1, G2 and G3 (P<0.05) .Conclusion The levels of RBC, WBC and PLT are negatively correlated with liver fibrosis stages and inflammation grades.The decrease of PLT to less than normal might be used as predictive value for early cirrhosis.
