Plasma and urinary endothelin were measured by radioimmunoassay in 40 patients with PHG.The results showed the lever of plasma endothelin (P Et) , urinary endothelin (U Et) and the rate of P Et/U Et were significantly higher in patients with PHG than in those with cirrhosis and without PHG (or healthy subjects) .P Et, U Et and P Et/U Et were clear difference two grade of PHG.Degree of portal hypertension demonstrated a significant positive correlation with P Et, U Et and P Et/U Et in patients with PHG.This data suggest that P Et participate in mechanism of PHG, which is connected with protal hypertension enhanced by P Et.
